Farm
Apprentice (2 positions) seasonal, full-time - May 1 to
August 31
This position is designed for a highly motivated individual that
is passionate about food and farming and are seriously interested
in pursuing a life in farming. The
exciting pace of farming in Alaska is contagious. Farm apprentices
arrive just as the last of the snow is melting off. Apprentices
are immediately integrated into the small farm crew and work alongside
experienced farmers. Apprentices are a part of every aspect of
producing food on the farm, including field preparation, planting,
irrigating, writing harvest notes, caring for the greenhouse and
interacting with the public. Subjects such as farm planning, starting
a CSA, business organization are common discussions which come
up based on apprentice interest. The primary focus of the program
is to develop the practical skills and conceptual mind set needed
to pursue a lifestyle and livelihood in small-scale organic farming.
However, each apprentice will be asked to set personal educational
goals and will work with a farmer mentor to review those goals
throughout the season. Apprentices will work throughout the busy
harvest season and leave just before the growing season has come
to an end. This position offers a monthly stipend and room and
board at the farm. Click here
