School Garden Caretaker Part-Time Position

Do you enjoy being outdoors and working with your hands? Do you have some gardening or farming experience? Calypso is hiring a School Garden Caretaker. The SG Caretaker works alongside the Garden Manager to prepare, plant and care for a network of five school gardens. You will work focus on building and planting the gardens in the spring and harvest in the late summer, but the majority of the time, you’ll be maintaining and caring for the gardens so that they’ll be vibrant and beautiful when school starts in the fall. Additionally, you’ll be helping out with weekly farm stands, selling school garden produce to the community! Calypso’s Assistant Field Manager
~Filled for the 2017 Season!~
Calypso’s Field Manager plays a primary role in the vegetable production and marketing at Calypso Farm. Activities include (but are not limited to): managing a small field crew, seeding, field preparation, planting, irrigation, cultivation, harvesting, building compost piles, going to Farmers’ Market, etc. Additionally, the Field Manager will work alongside and mentor participants in the Farmer Training Program on field production topics. There will be additional opportunities to teach through the Farmer Training Program – topics will depend on the applicant’s areas of expertise.

Building & Forestry Assistant
~Filled for the 2017 Season ~
Do you enjoy building projects and basic forestry? Join us for the 2017 season as a Building & Forestry Assistant. There are all kinds infrastructure projects happening at Calypso, both expected and unexpected—from maintaining existing structures, finishing projects and starting new ones. New projects for the 2017 season include a sauna, greenhouse renovations and a grain cellar. There are also some projected fencing projects. In addition to building projects, the Building and Forestry Assistant will be working on general forestry such as felling trees, bucking up firewood, clearing fence lines, etc. We are looking for someone who has building experience, is comfortable with power tools and a chainsaw and is fun to work with! ~Position Filled for 2017~
Calypso’s Farm Educator is responsible for coordinating and implementing Field Trips at Calypso Farm. The Field Trip season runs from mid-April, through September. Public school classes, private schools, preschools, day care centers, summer programs, local organizations, home school groups and independent family groups come out to Calypso for field trips each season. Each Field Trip lasts about 2 hours, however there are some shorter and longer based on the specific interests of the group. Field Trip groups are broken into smaller groups (~6-8 children per group). Each group moves around the farm and surrounding forest exploring and doing activities with an adult leader. The Farm Educator will lead groups and coordinate and train community volunteers and Farmer Training Program participants in leading groups. (Recruiting and coordinating with community volunteers is often the most challenging aspect of the job!) Calypso has developed a number of successful and popular field trip themes and offerings, however the Farm Educator will be welcome to try new ideas as well. The Farm Educator is also responsible for scheduling field trips, communicating with field trip groups, keeping on-going records and writing up a final season evaluation. Additionally, the Farm Educator will be a lead camp counselor for Calypso’s week-long Farm Camps in the summer. There will be three sessions of farm camp, one for younger children (aged 5-7) and two sessions for older children (aged 8-12). The Farm Educator will work directly with Calypso’s Camp Director who will lead the Farm Camps.

Calypso’s Field Trip Assistant works closely with the Farm Educator to run daily field trips for local school children. Field Trips begin in mid April and continues through the end of September. Hours are variable through the season with more hours in May, August and September. This is a great opportunity to spend the summer outdoors, working with children and enjoying the farm!
