Volunteer!

Volunteer at Calypso Farm and Ecology Center!

Be Part of a Movement... of individuals who value local food, strong community and a healthy environment!

Over the past seven years, Calypso Farm and education programs have grown and flourished thanks to
the dedication and hard work of hundreds of people. Please join us! Here is a sample of the many
ways you can get involved:

Work on the Farm
Every summer, volunteers join the farm crew, helping with spring planting, weekly harvests, and "composting parties." These individuals and groups are an invaluable part of the farm! To work on the farm with us, you can create a schedule or add yourself to a call list for special projects. Contact the farm for details! Calypso also has vegetable/work trade volunteer positions available; check out our Employment page for more information!

Facilitate Field Trips
As a field trip facilitator, you will lead a group of children learning about farming, local foods, and the boreal forest ecosystem. Training and support are provided! To become a field trip facilitator, contact the farm to have your name added to the field trip call list. When the field trip schedule is created, you can choose dates that work for you.

Join the Board of Directors
Calypso is governed by a ten-person Board of Directors. Directors meet monthly to discuss organizational business and are expected to head up a working committee in specific subject areas (listed below). This is a dynamic, fun group of people to work with! If you are interested in getting involved with the Board, please contact the Board Development Chair, Jose Rueter.

Join an Advisory Committee
Advisory Committees work on specific issues at Calypso. The following committees exist: Education, Community Outreach & Social Justice, CSA Core Group, Fundraising, Technology, Farm Infrastructure and Board Development. If you are interested in becoming a part of any of these committees, please contact the farm.

Help Out with Special Events
Calypso's Annual Farm Open House and Benefit Dinner and Auction require many, many hands. To get involved with either or both of these events, please contact the farm.

Get Involved in School Gardens
School gardens are an exciting new element in Fairbanks. Help is needed in planning, organization, fundraising and assisting teachers with garden-based lessons. There are currently three active school gardens (Effie Kokrine Charter School, U-Park Elementary and Pearl Creek Elementary) and several more schools that are working on getting gardens started (Woodriver Elementary, Barnette Magnet School and Hunter Elementary). If you are interested in assisting at any of these schools or starting a garden at another school, please contact the farm and we'll help you get involved.
Assist with Building Projects
During the summer of 2007, we will be building a new (more energy efficient) office. There are also all kinds of other small projects that come up each summer. If you're interested in swinging a hammer with Tom, please call the farm. We'd love your help!

If you have other skills or interests that you would like to contribute, please let us know!
